This time we bought an Autojoy 12 inch Blu-ray player. After a test phase, we would like to write feedback on the product.
About my background: Since I have been working in the service department of a well-known German electronics store for 13 years and am confronted with all kinds of electronic devices on a daily basis, I am confident that I can give a realistic assessment.
I have plenty of options for comparison since the 12-inch is my tenth portable in five years. The following are currently still available:
Sony DVD 7 inch / Sony Blu-ray 9 inch / Naviskauto Blu-ray 10.1 inch / Cutrip Blu-ray 10.1 inch / Autojoy Blu-ray 12 inch and 14 inch.
The remaining four players were either defective or were discarded because they were not liked. I use the players alternately to watch mainly old TV series during my lunch break in the car or in bed in the evening. In this test I will only evaluate the mobile properties of the device, because there are better solutions for using it at home on the TV than a portable one.
DELIVERY
>>Fast delivery via DHL, the packaging looks very sturdy and the device is foil-wrapped + shock-protected between two foam halves in an unadorned one. Very good.
PROCESSING
>>Generally very good workmanship: rounded corners and edges, high touch quality and finally five large, non-slip rubber feet under the device that don't fall off when unpacking
>>subtle, black housing, stable and solid - all surfaces scratch-resistant, slightly grooved and matted, housing largely insensitive to fingerprints
>>Articulation, panning and rotation of the screen precisely and stable, without annoying play
>>All connection sockets including ON/OFF switches are mounted completely together on the right side and are not scattered across the outside
>>Key noise on the control panel is a little more muted and pleasant
>>Screen anti-reflective, reflections only appear weakened.
>>unobtrusive drive noise (also dependent on the manufacturing quality of the disc inserted)
DEVICE OPERATION / REMOTE CONTROL
>>All important buttons on the control panel: left for drive control, right for menu and volume. Unfortunately, the two buttons at the top left for “MODE” and “BD/USB/CARD” were given away; more frequently used functions such as “DISPLAY” would be more useful.
and “MENU”, then more extensive control over the disc being played would be possible without having to constantly reach for the remote control. Buttons can be operated blindly due to their placement and shape.
>>well-balanced remote control (photo), clear button arrangement, can be operated blindly with a little practice
>>Finally a slow motion function on the remote control: “Slow” button changes back to normal playback after pressing 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 several times.
>>The “AB” marking is also great for playing back a scene excerpt in an endless loop.
Do you want to know whether the star is doubled by a stuntman in action scenes? Here's my tip: Mark "AB", then press "Slow", this creates a perfect slow motion study. If “Pause” is also activated, each additional key press causes single-image playback in an endless loop!
>>“Last Memory” for DVDs: If the stop button is pressed, the system finds the old playback position when it restarts.
This also works if you press “Open” on the compartment flap in the middle of a film and switch back and forth between several discs.
However, Last Memory does not respond when the empty battery switches off the device or when you end the film with the off button, i.e. when it is switched off in the middle. Only the 14 inch DVD from Autojoy and the two Sony players can do this feat!
PICTURE QUALITY
>>First Blu-ray portable with 12 inches in a pleasant picture size – bravo!
>>Harmonious image quality with Blu-ray: first-class sharpness + contrast, bright, even display illumination, natural, strong colors, even the finest details can be seen. You get the most out of DVDs; they look almost like Blu-rays on the 12-inch display - provided the source material is good. The black level is not quite optimal: in night scenes, black tends to be dark gray. Nevertheless, I would leave the image parameters in the menu at zero and not change much. Brighter or darker can be adjusted much more quickly via the display tilt - which is only possible with a portable.
<<The device plays my self-burned Blu-rays (BD-RE, BD-R recorded on a Panasonic BR recorder) without any problems in perfect quality (even extreme BDs with a running time of 19 hours and 97 titles. Great!) There are also a huge number of other image and sound formats - there is something suitable for almost everyone. Only 3D was omitted.
>>wide viewing angle horizontally (image brighter diagonally from above, significantly darker diagonally from below), display tilt can be precisely adjusted for an optimal viewing angle.
>>automatic format detection - in problem cases where the automatic system outputs an incorrect format, this can also be regulated quite laboriously via the menu: Setup > System > simple configuration menu > configuration help > language selection > image resolution > aspect ratio selection >16:9 Full / 16: 9 Normal / 4:3 Pan Scan / 4:3 Letterbox (regulation only reacts when stopped
Disc!). Since I mainly watch old 4:3 series, I had to search and try for a long time for 4:3, unfortunately the BDA wasn't helpful here.
>>Display of running time + remaining time can be switched via OSC button. A lot more information is available under this menu item.
SOUND QUALITY VIA SPEAKERS AND HEADPHONES
>>When connected to an AV system using an HDMI cable, the full picture and sound quality is transmitted. The good thing is that with the HDMI connection to the TV, the 12 inch screen switches itself off and the player menu appears on the TV.
>>When sound is played back via the built-in speakers, the sound is adequate and understandable, the bass range is completely missing due to the small volume of the housing.
>>The volume on the player can be finely adjusted.
BATTERY PACK
>>Battery is charged in a ratio of 2:3 during operation, so for example watching a film for 15 minutes with the power supply connected is enough for 10 minutes of film when running on battery power. Very good!
I also once had a Philips player that didn't charge the battery while it was in use - charging was actually only possible when the device was switched off!
SERVICE QUALITY
>>Since I had to contact Autojoy Service several times about my first two Autojoy DVD players, including a warranty complaint, I can only say: Congratulations - and please keep it up! The contact took place entirely via email: friendly, polite, always striving for quick processing, always responding quickly to inquiries - the service in Germany can take a big leaf out of this, especially with large domestic and foreign manufacturers.
CONCLUSION
In short, the Autojoy 12 inch Blu-ray player is a good choice.
What should be highlighted now is the large 12 inch screen, the excellent remote control, the insensitive housing with solid rubber feet, the slow motion function with “AB” marking, the more muted button noises and the clearly structured, blind-operated keypad on the device. As hoped, the picture has remained at the high level of its predecessor, and the extensive features and solid workmanship are also impressive.
It would be desirable to have a longer battery life to increase mobility, as well as a battery symbol on the display to end the annoying blind flight. The suboptimal sound range at the headphone output should also be corrected in order to create the perfect picture.
